There’s a certain level of excitement that comes with hunting in urban areas, where the challenge is unique. Not only do you have to deal with the constant hustle and bustle of city life, but you also face the added challenge of hunting bucks that have become almost nocturnal and have learned to stay hidden in plain sight. For me, this particular hunt took an unexpected turn when I encountered an urban giant at just 10 yards—my closest, most intense bow hunting experience yet.
It all started in the heart of a bustling neighborhood. As a hunter who has spent most of my time in rural settings, the thought of bagging a mature buck in an urban environment seemed like a long shot. But, after several scouting trips and hours of watching the movement patterns of the local deer, I knew there was a giant living nearby. His massive antlers were the stuff of local legend—he had been spotted on multiple occasions, always staying just out of range.
On this particular evening, the weather was perfect—cool, calm, and still. I set up my stand near a small patch of woods bordering the suburban area. As the sun began to set, I started to hear the familiar rustling of leaves and the soft sounds of deer moving through the underbrush. What I didn’t expect was that the urban giant would appear from the shadows, walking right through the very backyard of a nearby home.
The buck was massive, with antlers that could rival any I’d seen in my years of hunting. But there was one major issue: I was on the ground, and he was heading straight for me. My heart raced as the deer came closer, unaware of my presence. With a few short, deliberate steps, he was within 10 yards—a range I’d never had for such a giant. The window for the shot was small, and I had no tree to climb to give me an elevated advantage.

Taking a deep breath and reminding myself to stay calm, I drew my bow, holding my position as the buck’s body language seemed to pause for a split second. With steady hands, I let the arrow fly. The release felt perfect, and the arrow struck true. The buck bolted, but I knew the shot was solid.
Tracking him through the urban landscape wasn’t easy, but after a short search, I found him lying just outside the neighborhood. The feeling of taking such an impressive buck at 10 yards, from the ground, in the heart of the city, was indescribable. This hunt reminded me that the wild can thrive anywhere, and sometimes, the most unforgettable moments happen when you least expect them.
