WILLIE’S FIRST BULL | Utah Archery Elk Hunting | BUCK COMMANDER

Elk hunting is a different beast. Unlike whitetails, these massive animals demand patience, strategy, and a whole lot of grit. For Willie Robertson, the challenge was real—but so was the reward. His first bull elk hunt in Utah was nothing short of legendary, and it was all captured with the Buck Commander crew.

The trip kicked off in the rugged mountains of Utah, where the early fall air carried the sound of bugling bulls. Archery season was in full swing, and the excitement was high. With a bow in hand and a tag to fill, Willie set out with his guide, hoping to get up close and personal with one of these incredible animals.

The first few days were a game of cat and mouse. Bulls were talking, but closing the distance was another story. Every time they got close, the wind would shift, or the bull would change direction. The frustration was real, but that’s elk hunting—one moment, you’re on top of the world; the next, you’re back to square one.

Then, on the third morning, everything changed. A deep, guttural bugle echoed through the valley. The crew moved in, keeping the wind right as they crept toward the bull’s location. At 60 yards, they spotted him—a massive, mature bull standing in a small clearing. Willie drew back, steadying his breath. The moment of truth had arrived.

The arrow flew clean, hitting perfectly behind the shoulder. The bull crashed forward, running a short distance before going down. The celebration was immediate—Willie’s first bull was on the ground! The excitement, the effort, and the challenge all made the moment even sweeter.

Hunting elk with a bow isn’t easy, but that’s what makes it special. The Utah backcountry had tested Willie, but he had risen to the occasion. His first bull will forever be a memory etched in Buck Commander history.
