BEST DAY We Have EVER HAD in the TIMBER!

The crisp Indiana air carried the scent of damp leaves and fresh snow as we made our way into the timber, muzzleloaders in hand. It was the second day of our public land hunt, and after a slow morning, we had no idea the day ahead would be one for the books.

As the sun rose, the timber came alive. Squirrels rustled in the leaves, birds flitted between branches, and a distant gobble from a wild turkey echoed through the trees. Then, just after 8 AM, movement caught my eye. A big-bodied buck eased through the timber, his breath visible in the cold air.

Slowly, I raised my muzzleloader, heart pounding. The buck stopped broadside at 80 yards, ears twitching. I steadied my aim, took a deep breath, and squeezed the trigger. BOOM! Smoke filled the air, and as it cleared, I saw him stagger before crashing into the thick brush.

The celebration had barely begun when my hunting partner whispered, “Another one coming!” Sure enough, a second buck—just as big—was making his way through the timber. This time, it was his turn. Another well-placed shot, another massive buck down.

We could hardly believe it. Two mature Indiana bucks taken on public land within an hour! The hard work, scouting, and patience had paid off in a way we never imagined. As we tagged our deer and took in the moment, we knew this was the best day we had ever had in the timber.

Indiana’s public land had rewarded us beyond expectation, and this hunt would be a story we’d tell for years to come.
