FULL VELVET GIANT!!! First Time Hunting w/ a Muzzleloader in Kansas

The thrill of hunting a full velvet giant is an experience few hunters ever get to enjoy. For me, it was the culmination of years of dreaming and preparation—my first time hunting with a muzzleloader, in the heart of Kansas, during the early season when bucks are still in their velvet. The excitement of chasing a mature buck in its prime, with the added challenge of using a muzzleloader, made this hunt one to remember.

Kansas, known for its abundant wildlife and massive whitetail bucks, offers some of the best hunting opportunities in the country. The early season, just before the velvet sheds, is a prime time to hunt mature bucks. These animals are still in their summer patterns, often feeding during the early morning and late evening hours. This is the perfect window for hunters using a muzzleloader, which, while challenging, offers a unique and rewarding experience.

I had spent weeks getting familiar with my new muzzleloader—learning its quirks, cleaning it, and ensuring I could make an accurate shot. The muzzleloader offers a slower, more deliberate pace compared to modern rifles, which means hunters need to be patient and take their time. It also requires a deeper level of focus when it comes to shooting and reloading, making every shot count that much more.

The hunt itself took place in a prime area known for producing large bucks. The land was a mix of thick timber, open fields, and watering holes, all of which created the perfect setting for deer to move through. On the second morning, I found myself perched in a tree stand overlooking a lush food plot. The sun was just starting to rise, and I was on high alert, knowing that any moment could bring the chance I had been waiting for.

Then, just as the morning mist started to lift, I saw him—the full velvet giant emerging from the treeline. His antlers, still covered in velvet, were massive and impressive, and he moved with a quiet confidence. My heart raced as I carefully prepared my shot, making sure I had the perfect angle.

With a steady hand, I aimed and squeezed the trigger. The muzzleloader let out a loud boom, and the giant buck took off running. I was sure it was a clean hit, but there was no time to celebrate. I waited for what felt like hours, listening intently, before tracking the buck. I finally found him in a thicket, a successful hunt that I would remember forever.

Hunting with a muzzleloader in Kansas, chasing a full velvet giant, was everything I had hoped for and more. It was a true test of skill, patience, and respect for the hunt. The experience taught me to appreciate the beauty of the land, the thrill of the chase, and the satisfaction of a well-executed plan.
