Hunting GIANT Moose in Western Newfoundland

Newfoundland is home to some of the largest moose in North America, and hunting these giants in the rugged western region is an adventure like no other. With vast wilderness, rolling hills, and thick boreal forests, the challenge of tracking and calling in a massive bull is as rewarding as the hunt itself.

The Hunt Begins

Our journey started deep in the heart of Western Newfoundland, where we set out before sunrise, navigating through dense forests and open bogs. With the rut in full swing, we relied heavily on calling to lure in a dominant bull. The crisp morning air carried the echoes of distant grunts, signaling that we were in a prime location.

After an hour of slow and careful movement, we spotted fresh tracks and rubs on nearby trees—clear signs of a big bull in the area. We set up near a clearing and began calling with long, drawn-out cow moans, hoping to bring him into range.

The Bull Responds

Fifteen minutes later, a deep grunt broke the silence. The sound was close, and we could hear branches snapping as the bull approached. Slowly, a massive set of antlers emerged from the thick brush. The bull was cautious, scanning the area for the cow he expected to find.

Using the wind to our advantage, we stayed motionless, allowing the moose to move in. At just 40 yards, he stopped, broadside. With my heart pounding, I steadied my rifle, took a deep breath, and squeezed the trigger. The shot rang out, and the bull lunged forward before collapsing just 50 yards away.

A Hunt to Remember

Walking up to the fallen giant, I was in awe of his sheer size. His antlers stretched wide, and his body was massive—truly a trophy bull. The effort, patience, and skill required to take down such a beast made the experience even more rewarding.

The pack-out was grueling, but every step was worth it. Hunting in Western Newfoundland had tested our endurance and determination, but it had also given us an unforgettable adventure. The combination of breathtaking landscapes, heart-pounding encounters, and the ultimate reward of harvesting a giant moose made this a hunt of a lifetime.

For those seeking a true wilderness experience, Newfoundland’s moose hunting is second to none.
